Solar water pumps can provide a great alternative to traditional grid-tied pumps. For remote locations, where water is required, a solar powered water pump may be the ideal solution. For the homeowner, with a water feature in their backyard, solar powered fountains and pumps may be a more economical approach.
The submersible solar water pump is designed mainly for pumping water from wells. They are specifically made to fit in the well casing. The most usual size of the well casing is 6 inches, but it may also come in 4 or 5 inches. Older wells sometimes have casing that are less than 4 inches, and majority of submersible water pumps will not fit in it.
Wells are deep, usually 180 feet or even deeper. If your well is deeper, the pump may be a bit more expensive. Wells that go 400 feet deep would really require a more expensive water pump. Solar well pumps are rarely suited for huge amounts of water like that of irrigating fields. The common pumps are available at ¼ to 2 HP only.
The surface delivery pumps, on the other hand, are basically used for moving water from a one place to another. Not all the surface delivery pumps are the same. Some of the pumps are designed for high pressure while some are meant only to move huge volumes of water at low pressure (example of this is moving water from a reservoir to a watering tank). The flows can start small (usually at ½ gallon every minute or somewhere near it) up to 30 to 40 gpm. These pumps are also frequently used for pressurizing water systems in boats, RV’s and simply in your home, thus the name “pressure or booster” pumps.
Solar power companies are usually the ones that offer solar water pumps. These water pumps have proven to be useful over the years of its existence. There are also several brands of these solar pumps, such as Conergy and Shurflo. It is, of course, up to the customer to choose the best brand for him. One thing is for sure, solar water pumps do not need any heavy machinery or any other complicated wiring. A tiny solar panel, coupled with a battery storage device is enough to get water flowing.
